Proserpina is a fantasy film inspired by the legend of Cupid and Psyche. It tells the story of a woman who, like Psyche, is forbidden to see the face of the man she desires and is soon overtaken by fear and doubt.
The film begins at this turning point in the legend and takes us on a journey into her subconscious. It is a journey of self-discovery and of understanding the other, where the protagonist is confronted with a question that will determine the outcome of the story:
How can I trust someone whose face I cannot see?
Proserpina is the result of extensive research into combining live action, animation, video art and dance. The intention was to tell an intimate story through a distinctive narrative approach and visual language, where reality and the subconscious coexist, gradually merging until they become indistinguishable.
I cast Jacqueline Bulnes, a Cuban-American choreographer and dancer, in the leading role. Her background in contemporary dance played a key role in shaping the physical language of the film and the character of Proserpina.
This collaboration allowed us to tell a story without words, where emotions emerge through movement, expression and evocative imagery.
